There are many many things wrong with this country today, and Michael Moore has definitely pointed out a ton of them by catching it on video for his documentaries. It would appear as if greed is about to grab us from below and slowly pull us down into the depths of hell because of a few powerful people running the most powerful companies in the United States. Of course we could talk about the oil industry and how we are fighting a war to maintain cheaper prices on energy and we could talk about how the banks of the United States have been playing with risky loans and credit default swaps trying to make it seem like they have a lot more money than they actually do, but these are tired subjects. We are tired of hearing about how people who the government still deems too important to fail cheated us of our tax dollars and caused an economic melt down. At this point, I’d rather talk about women’s shoes.
If you look at the market for women’s shoes, it’s one of the things that is constantly growing despite the economic distress everyone is feeling. Apparently, it is one of the last things a woman will give up buying next too food and shelter. Stores are still popping up all over the place for women’s shoes, sometimes exclusively for women’s shoes, while the men’s section seems to continually shrink. Shoes for women are like video games and beer for men. I?m not trying to be sexist, but many of the women I know would rather give up the quality of what they eat for fashionable clothing and footwear. There’s nothing wrong with that and I’m not blaming the women for it. This country has become so obsessed with materialistic things that we are putting formal dresses and jewelry above a lot of things we should care more about.
One should look at how expensive fashion has gotten over the years frankly because we have let it become important somehow. They can charge thousands of dollars for a pair of heels because of the artificial value that has gone into it. A pair of heels can cost that much, not because of the material, but because of who designed it, what color it is depending on what is “in” at the moment, and which people wear it. Handbags are the same way. They are inflated because people let it be a big deal. We as a country are headed down a dangerous road.
